Over a decade has passed since the release of its predecessor, yet Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 remarkably stays true to the original Space Marine, a beloved game that’s long deserved a reboot. Just in time for Black Friday, physical copies for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X are available at an all-time low price. Although the PC version doesn’t enjoy the same dramatic discount, Fanatical is offering Steam codes for $52.79, down from $59.99.
Space Marine 2 sets itself apart by avoiding the flashy extras seen in many modern action games, simply because it doesn’t need them. The single-player campaign is set in the grim and distant future of the 41st millennium, where only war prevails. Players will find themselves once again stepping into the boots of Titus, an Ultramarine tasked with serving the Emperor of Mankind, who returns to duty after spending a couple of centuries on the sidelines.
Warhammer 40,000’s universe is steeped in rich lore, and I’ve spent years diving into its intricate codices, novels detailing events from millennia past, and extensive fan theories online. Impressively, Space Marine 2 is easily accessible to newcomers; you won’t find yourself needing to constantly research to follow the story. Despite this approachability, it doesn’t skimp on the iconic 40K style. Picture robotic cherubs and mechanized zealots aboard Titus’ massive battle barge—all these elements beautifully capture the sprawling, gothic absurdity of the Imperium of Man and its Imperial Guard.
However, the game’s true charm lies in its exhilarating combat. Titus charges through waves of Tyranids, tearing them apart with his gauntlets and crushing them underfoot. The arsenal enhances the chaos; a flamethrower to torch swarming Rippers or a laser sniper rifle for precision strikes only add to the thrill. It’s a wild and incredibly fun journey.
