It’s been a while since we last heard any updates about Sony’s SRH-S1 standalone MR headset, first introduced at CES 2024. But now, this enterprise-centric device not only has an official launch date but also a price tag.
Developed in collaboration with Siemens, the Sony SRH-S1 headset is scheduled to make its debut in February 2025. With a price point of $4,750, Sony and Siemens are clearly directing this product toward the enterprise sector. Interested businesses can begin placing their orders on January 23rd next year, with purchases available directly through Siemens.
Initially promoted last year as appealing to creatives, it’s now evident that Sony and Siemens are really focusing on industrial applications. They claim the SRH-S1 will “enable the industrial metaverse,” enhancing product design and manufacturing, courtesy of Siemens’ advanced mixed reality toolset.
The headset boasts impressive technology, featuring Sony’s very own ECX344A OLED microdisplay that offers a resolution of 13.6MP (3,552 × 3840) per eye. Powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chipset, it also incorporates what Sony describes as “proprietary rendering technology” for true-to-life 3D object rendering—something any enterprise could find useful.
Designed as a mixed reality device, the SRH-S1 comes equipped with passthrough video, a convenient flip-up visor, and a duo of ergonomic controllers. These controllers, thoughtfully designed for intuitive 3D interaction, include a stylus-type pointer and a ring for more precise navigation.
On top of all that, Siemens has been hard at work over the past year, refining its suite of enterprise-focused Immersive Engineering tools. These tools are designed to let SRH-S1 users dive deep into designing 3D assets using CAD, engage with interactive models, and even conduct remote multi-user design reviews via Siemens’ NX X platform—a cloud-based service.
Bob Haubrock, Senior VP of Product Engineering Software at Siemens Digital Industries Software, remarked, “After previewing the HMD at CES last year, our collaborative teams have created tools that truly transform mixed reality within the engineering realm. They don’t just facilitate global collaboration on high-fidelity 3D models but also allow for co-creation on critical 3D CAD data in a controlled and secure environment.”
Alongside these announcements, CES this week also shed light on another exciting project from Sony: a creative-focused headset aimed at prosumers, named XYN. Although we don’t have a price or release date for XYN yet, it remains a prototype for now. Interestingly, XYN appears to be a variant of the SRH-S1, with its distinction mainly coming from its sleek black color, while the SRH-S1 sports a grey design.
