Hironobu Sakaguchi, the mastermind behind the iconic Final Fantasy series, isn’t quite ready to hang up his game development hat just yet. Known for his impressive catalog of legendary games, Sakaguchi is exploring new projects that echo the magic of one of the series’ most cherished installments.
While Sakaguchi has long been a notable figure in the gaming world, much of his recent work has come from his own studio, Mistwalker. Fresh off the console re-release of Fantasian, he’s already got his sights set on a new venture. In a recent chat with The Verge, he shared insights about working with Square Enix again and, teasingly, his plans for the next game.
Initially intended to make Fantasian Neo Dimension his final masterpiece, Sakaguchi found the creative process with his team too fulfilling to step away from. “Humans are greedy creatures, aren’t we?” he mused. Captivated by the team’s synergy, he’s diving back in with a project that revisits familiar themes. This new game aspires to carry the torch from Final Fantasy 6, aiming to balance nostalgia with innovation. Sakaguchi describes it as “part two of my farewell note.”
To fans, the prospect of a game reminiscent of Final Fantasy 6 is a welcome promise. This particular entry holds a special place in many hearts, not only for its poignant storyline but also because it marked the end of an era before the transition to 3D graphics. Though we might have to exercise patience before this new project surfaces, it’s a perfect excuse to revisit Final Fantasy 6 or dive into the well-received Fantasian Neo Dimension in the meantime.
