I’ve always had a thing about clowns, usually not the good kind, so a game that lets me take aim at one naturally caught my eye. Twisted Tower isn’t just about that, though—it’s an exhilarating ride with a gleeful touch of chaos, very much in the vein of Bioshock. Set in a nightmarish amusement park that perfectly matches its name, this game throws all kinds of wild adversaries at you across its many levels. Thankfully, you’re equipped with some pretty eccentric weaponry, like a machine gun that spews gumballs. If that sounds as fun to you as it does to me, you might want to dive into the new demo available on Steam.
The story kicks off with our hero getting an invitation to this rundown theme park. Once you arrive, it’s a no-holds-barred battle against creepy, armed mascots in this first-person shooter. Each encounter adds more bizarre guns to your arsenal as you navigate a twisted maze of decayed carnival fare—imagine Willy Wonka and Andrew Ryan teaming up to create Disneyland, only to leave it to rot.
At the helm of this madness is Mr. Twister, an ambitious toymaker who’s behind all the sinister figures you have to outwit. He’s crafted this elaborate circus of terror for entertainment, broadcasting your every move on the radio as you struggle through the zany obstacles. The journey upwards is littered with insanity, which, while amusing to spectators, is less so for you—until you get your hands on the right weaponry, that is.
The whimsical carnage in Twisted Tower has its own charm. Taking down foes rewards you with bursts of confetti because, of course, they’re toys, while some baddies greet you with animal-like calls, building on the layered theme-park chaos. It nods to Bioshock in style, but with a lighter, more playful tone akin to American McGee’s Alice.
Created by Thomas Brush of Atmos Games, a solo developer known for Neversong and Pinstripe, Twisted Tower marks a bold leap in both scale and ambition. Transitioning from 2D to a vibrant 3D shooter, the game’s environments are packed with twists and surprises that will keep you on your toes.
First impressions are promising, and you can experience it firsthand. The demo for Twisted Tower is available right now on Steam if you’re curious.
