A Korean game development studio, Pixelity, has exciting news for fans of the iconic ’90s anime, Neon Genesis Evangelion. They’re currently working on an XR game inspired by the celebrated series.
Pixelity recently shared in a blog post that they’ve struck a licensing deal with Japan’s Studio Khara to create this game. The plan is to release it in three parts, covering all 26 episodes of the original anime. The first part is already in the works and is slated for a 2026 release.
For those who adore Evangelion as much as we do, this is thrilling news. The anime, which first aired in 1995 and set in the year 2015, revolutionized the industry and became a cultural landmark, heavily influencing future anime. It chronicles the journey of Shinji Ikari, chosen to pilot the Evangelion, a humanoid robot, as humanity’s last stand against enigmatic creatures known as Angels who threaten the futuristic city of Tokyo-3.
While Pixelity hasn’t disclosed which platforms the game will debut on, they promise an immersive XR experience. Players will be thrust into familiar settings, following the original storyline and participating in missions and battles.
According to the studio, "The game will include collaborative play elements where you’ll interact with characters from the Evangelion universe, a feature designed to captivate long-time fans. Our goal is to deliver a dynamic experience true to the action-adventure genre."
Established in 2017, Pixelity has a track record of developing engaging VR games like Puttzzle (2023), Crazyworld VR (2022), and Rise of the Fallen (2018). They’re also currently developing two more VR games, The Patcher and Teahouse of Souls.
While there have been previous attempts to bring Evangelion to VR, this marks the first official at-home game adaptation for the series. Back in 2017, Bandai Namco’s VR studio ‘Project i Can’ released Evangelion VR: The Throne of Souls, a four-player experience, but it was only available for a limited time at VR ZONE in Shinjuku, Japan.
With Pixelity’s new project, fans across the globe can finally look forward to an interactive way to relive the excitement of Neon Genesis Evangelion from the comfort of their own homes.
