Skyblivion is the ambitious project that aims to bring The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion to life using Skyrim’s engine. Recently, it captivated fans at the Community Creations Con (C3) with a sneak peek of new quest gameplay, all in anticipation of its grand release slated for 2025.
Although the team initially planned for about 30 minutes of gameplay footage, it extended to around 40 minutes. You know how it goes — sometimes you’re on a quest and suddenly an NPC isn’t quite where you expect them to be, adding an unpredictable twist to the adventure.
Excitingly, the Skyblivion team recently completed the crucial task of finalizing the landscape work for Cyrodiil’s last region, the Niben Basin and Valley. So, this time, the gameplay highlight revolved around the city of Cheydinhal and its surroundings.
Viewers were treated to quick walkthroughs of two quests. The first was a Fighters Guild quest focused on sorting out Biene Amelion’s debt. The second was the fan-favorite, “A Brush with Death,” where players venture into the painted world of dark elf Rythe Lythandas to rescue the artist with a magical paintbrush.
What’s truly impressive is how detailed and polished the Skyblivion world looks. Project lead Kyle ‘Rebelzize’ Rebel showcased a familiar walk into Cheydinhal, and it was a delight to see the nostalgic feel retained while refining some of the rough edges from the 2006 classic.
The painted world quest exemplifies this blend of nostalgia and innovation. Even though vanilla Oblivion’s room might not feel overly special, Skyblivion transforms it into an expansive, visually striking dungeon, ending in a space designed to resemble unpainted canvas.
An interesting upgrade is the revamped interaction menu UI, which lends a distinctive Oblivion vibe to balance Skyrim’s style inventory, compass, and map. The combat, too, has unique touches. For instance, you might find yourself battling skeletons with tails, courtesy of new models for elf and beast races that exceed even Skyrim’s original design.
Currently, there’s no specific release date beyond the 2025 timeframe, but the developers have reassured fans: “We are confident we can get it out this year.”
