At today’s Triple-i Initiative indie showcase, we got a first glimpse of “Over the Hill,” an exciting new offroading game from Funselektor—the developers behind “Absolute Drift” and “Art of Rally”—in collaboration with Strelka Games.
Announced this January, “Over the Hill” takes the sleek, minimalist art style that Funselektor is known for and applies it to an experience somewhat akin to “SnowRunner,” but with less hassle involving vehicle trailers. To clarify, that’s the kind of trailer you attach to a vehicle, though rest assured, they’re having plenty of fun with cinematic game trailers, too.
If you’ve been eagerly waiting, the new gameplay video will surely pique your interest. The game boasts over 200,000 wishlists on Steam already, even though there’s no confirmed release date yet. It promises all the offroad antics you’d expect—like getting your tires stuck in the mud and wrestling with a winch—minus the hefty maintenance bills of owning a real-life Land Rover.
The game allows up to four players to explore stunning landscapes in vintage off-road vehicles from the ’60s to the ’80s. This aligns perfectly with Funselektor’s usual retro car-themed environments. You’ll traverse terrains that change with the seasons and weather, adding depth and variety to each adventure.
One of the neat touches is the straightforward user interface, featuring a mini-map that resembles an Ordnance Survey—you know, the kind your dad might dramatically spread out on the car’s dashboard during a countryside road trip. The winching mechanics should feel familiar for “SnowRunner” fans: select a spot, marked by a dot, and reel it in.
You’ll also find options for customizing your vehicle to optimize its off-road capabilities, and a photo mode for capturing those unforgettable moments—whether you’ve just crested a peak or are humorously tumbling down it after a tricky turn. Both are definitely photo-worthy!
