In the world of virtual reality modding, a developer named Holydh has made waves by releasing the GTA: San Andreas Definitive Edition – 6DoF UEVR Plugin. This exciting mod brings PC VR support to the game’s Steam version.
Back in August, Meta and Rockstar hit pause on their much-anticipated Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas VR port for Quest, with no clear timeline for its release. This decision essentially handed the reins to the resourceful modding community—a dedicated group always ready to bring iconic games like GTA into the VR realm. This decision followed a period of instability for the GTA franchise, with Rockstar struggling due to leaks, job cuts, and the less-than-perfect launch of its remastered “Definitive Editions,” including San Andreas.
Holydh’s creation is far from a basic adaptation of the game’s original controls into a VR environment. Offering a comprehensive transformation, the mod introduces full first-person support and 6DOF (six degrees of freedom) motion controls. Players will also notice camera enhancements that span both gameplay and cinematic scenes. This is powered by an advanced version of modder Praydog’s UEVR injector. It’s a tool that enables VR compatibility across many PC games built on Unreal Engine 4.8 or newer.
For those curious, there’s a demonstration of the mod available online which is worth a watch. More details, including information about UEVR, can be found on its dedicated Nexus Mods page. A word of caution, though: this mod is only compatible with the Steam version of San Andreas Definitive Edition. Unfortunately, the versions available through the Epic Games Store and Rockstar Launcher won’t work with it.
Considering Rockstar’s history, there’s reason to be cautious. The company has previously taken legal action, as seen with the Luke Ross VR mod for Grand Theft Auto 5. However, Holydh is optimistic that this mod will be safe from such troubles since it’s freely available and doesn’t contain Rockstar’s proprietary files. This contrasts with the Luke Ross mod, which initially required a purchase.
