Ubisoft, the well-known French company, is rumored to be working on a new battle royale game designed to compete directly with Apex Legends.
According to reports from Insider Gaming, this project, which goes by the codename “Scout,” seems closely aligned with Respawn and EA’s successful title Apex Legends. There have even been instances where artwork from Scout was mistakenly used as a thumbnail for the game, and it apparently includes characters that share remarkable similarities with those in Apex Legends. Development on this game has been underway for a while now.
It appears that Ubisoft is banking on the possibility of luring players away from Apex Legends. This thought comes as Electronic Arts has acknowledged a downturn in Apex’s financial performance, suggesting the game might not be as lucrative as it once was.
A source shared that Ubisoft’s objective seems to be capturing some of the player base that Apex might be losing, betting on a market opening for another hero-based battle royale game. They believe there’s a chance to establish a foothold in this space.
This is not Ubisoft’s first venture into free-to-play battle royales. Back in 2020, they introduced Hyperscape, which, unfortunately, didn’t last long and was shut down after about 18 months. More recently, the company also decided to cancel the free-to-play shooter XDefiant by the end of 2024.
In a related note, there are plans for a new Apex Legends 2.0 update, which is anticipated to be released sometime after April 2026.
