Bigscreen has just unveiled its latest innovation in virtual reality: the Beyond PC VR headset. This new generation of headsets features cutting-edge pancake lenses that promise a wider field-of-view and sharper visuals. To cater to both home enthusiasts and enterprise users, Bigscreen has introduced customizable interpupillary distance (IPD) adjustments and a versatile Lightseal facial interface, making the headset appealing across various user groups.
In this release, Bigscreen is offering two variations: the Beyond 2 and Beyond 2e. Breaking away from the popular ‘e’ suffix naming conventions like Apple’s iPhone models, the ‘e’ here signifies its eye-tracking capabilities. The Beyond 2e includes all of the Beyond 2’s features and integrates a compact eye-tracking suite powered by AI. This technology supports low-latency, privacy-centered tracking, working seamlessly with platforms like SteamVR, OpenXR, and VRChat. A testing phase is expected to start by the summer of 2025.
When it comes to pricing, expect to shell out $1,019 for the Beyond 2 and $1,219 for the Beyond 2e. However, previous owners of the original Beyond can snag a discount, bringing the prices down to $849 and $1,049 respectively. The initial shipments are set to roll out in April, with an added halo-style strap option slated for a Q3 2025 debut. Both models will be available in Carbon Black, Crystal Clear, and Nuclear Orange hues.
Continuing its commitment to the SteamVR ecosystem, the Beyond 2 series sticks to the trusted tracking standard. This entails compatibility with both SteamVR 1.0 and 2.0 base stations and a wide range of accessories like body trackers and Valve’s Index controllers. Remember, a VR-ready PC is essential for these headsets. You can check your system’s compatibility online.
Interestingly, the resolution remains the same as the previous model, employing dual 1-inch 2,560 × 2,560 micro-OLED displays. Yet, the real standout feature is the refined pancake lens design, boosting the field-of-view to an impressive 116-degree diagonal—up from the original’s 102. What’s more, the headset is significantly lighter, weighing in at just 107 grams, outpacing other devices like the Meta Quest 3 and Apple Vision Pro in terms of portability.
Brightness and glare reduction in the Beyond 2 have also seen a substantial upgrade, thanks to its high-performance lenses. They provide a wide "sweet spot" for enhanced viewing experiences compared to its predecessor, Beyond 1.
Another exciting enhancement is the adjustable IPD feature, allowing users to precisely modify each lens independently using a handy tool. This is a noteworthy improvement from Beyond 1’s fixed system that required a tedious face scan for perfect fitting.
For those concerned about accessories, the Beyond 2 remains compatible with many of its predecessor’s add-ons. It supports the same custom-fit cushions as Beyond 1 but offers a universal Lightseal fit for increased versatility. For those into customizable setups, the headsets are compatible with various accessories, including the optic cable, link box, and audio strap. Even prescription lens inserts crafted before 2025 for the original model work with the Beyond 2, albeit not the 2e variant.
The upcoming halo-style mount, expected in Q3 2025, takes inspiration from military night vision goggles, providing refined adjustments and accommodating different configurations. Details on the mount’s pricing are still under wraps, but more information will likely surface as the release date approaches.
Bigscreen plans to ship these units from its Los Angeles facility to buyers in several countries, with expansion plans to include South Korea, Mexico, Israel, and the UAE later.
