In an exciting development for Civilization 7 enthusiasts, Firaxis Games has announced a series of updates set for March 2025, along with plans for enhancements further down the line. These updates follow a series of patches released in response to player feedback gathered during early access leading up to the game’s official launch on February 11.
As the first new entry in the Civilization series in almost ten years, Civilization 7 saw a rush of interest, hitting over 80,000 concurrent players on Steam just a day after its release. Despite largely positive reviews from critics, a significant number of players voiced their dissatisfaction, particularly on Steam, where the game currently holds a “Mixed” rating. Out of over 25,000 reviews, only 50% are positive. Firaxis is, however, diligently addressing these concerns with the game’s ongoing updates, which included a major patch on day one.
The latest update roadmap shared by Firaxis outlines what players can expect over the coming weeks. The March 4 update, version 1.1.0, is set to introduce a suite of UI improvements responding to player feedback. This release will also re-enable crossplay between consoles and PC, which had been temporarily disabled to expedite PC patching. Players can also look forward to new content, such as the Bermuda Triangle as a natural wonder, adjustments to the Modern Age’s Cultural Legacy Path and Victory conditions, and various multiplayer fixes. Notably, the in-game event “Natural Wonder Battle” has been postponed to prioritize quality-of-life updates.
Following closely on its heels, the update scheduled for March 25 (version 1.1.1) will bring additional features like the Quick Move function, naming customization for commanders and cities, and the introduction of Mount Everest as another natural wonder. This update will also continue improving the UI. The first of the two March updates will unlock the initial part of the Crossroads of the World Collection DLC, while the second will roll out the rest of it. Looking beyond March, Firaxis aims to deliver more features such as new resource types, research queueing capabilities, multiplayer team functionalities, and modding support.
The proactive stance Firaxis is taking with these updates is promising for the long-term success of Civilization 7. However, it remains to be seen whether these changes will be enough to win back the favor of those players still on the fence about the game’s initial release state.
