Merciless As The Sea
Before claiming the title of The Houndmaster, Portia Maye had a life poised for the ordinary. Her childhood was full of her father’s affection, and a sense of adventure colored her days spent at sea. But her life was irreversibly changed when Mad Molak, a vicious pirate, attacked her father’s ship, Nightsdream, mercilessly eliminating nearly everyone on board.
Spared only for her skills in celestial navigation, Portia was drawn to a dark path by the alluring call of vengeance. Her narrow escape involved steering the Nightsdream into the infamous Dragon’s Tooth, taking her captors down with her. Surviving this ordeal, she found herself alone until she encountered her loyal puppy, Snug.
Interestingly, Portia once embodied the true essence of a survivor. She not only outlived the massacre that claimed her father’s ship but also endured years stranded on Dragon’s Tooth. Unfortunately, her obsession with revenge grew with each passing year.
Little did she know, Dragon’s Tooth was a Bleed, a mysterious intersection where realms converge, akin to paints blending on an artist’s palette.
Lead Narrative Director Jessi Thind explains, “A Bleed has a way of twisting the mind. Surviving one is rare, and it often drives you to madness.”
Her path to insanity coincided with her prowess in brutality, ultimately surpassing even Molak’s cruelty. By the time she exacted her revenge, her fate within The Entity’s realm was well-sealed.
Her attachment to humanity remained only through Snug, her devoted protector. This relationship manifests in her unique power, allowing Snug to track and apprehend Survivors.
For The Black Talon
Taurie Cain grew up within the Black Talon, a sinister branch of the Black Vale, dedicating her life to unraveling The Entity’s secrets. When her parents ventured into a Bleed for research, Taurie bravely followed them, just in time to meet disaster head-on.
Determined and loyal to her cause, Taurie quickly ascended the ranks of the Black Talon. While others, like Haddie Kaur and Elodie Rakoto, merely encountered the Black Vale’s influence, Taurie embraced the darkness, convinced The Entity held the key to surpassing human limits.
“Having grown up as a member of the Black Talon, Taurie genuinely believes her actions benefit humanity,” Thind clarifies. "Yet, as she ascended, her path darkened until she faced a critical decision."
Her pivotal moment arrived when tasked with executing Jordan Rois, Haddie Kaur’s stepbrother and a perpetual nuisance to the Talon. In a crucial instance, Taurie hesitated, steering her destiny just before being enveloped by The Fog.
Within The Fog, her understanding transformed into horror as she realized her years of dedication only led to endless torment. However, Taurie remained unwavering in her belief that her purpose was still undiscovered.
“Her faith in the Vale can be advantageous in The Fog. She keeps believing that everything follows a grand design, hoping for The Entity’s recognition,” Thind adds. “But it begs the question, why did The Entity bring her as a Survivor?”
Thind continues, “The Entity thrives on emotions. Perhaps it sees potential in her unresolved conflicts with fellow Survivors, building tension and resentment. They fuel it in ways we can only speculate.”
Determined, Taurie strives to adapt in her new realm. Her Perks allow her to detach from allies and draw the Killer’s focus, channeling pain into strength.
It’s fascinating how both Portia and Taurie spent time within Bleeds, yet only one emerged unscathed. Under different circumstances, their roles in The Entity’s world might have been different. But once trapped in this trajectory, veering off course is impossible, especially when cloaked in Fog…
