Delta Force has carved out a significant space for itself as another hit in the realm of free-to-play games on Steam. Next month, it’s set to debut its paid campaign, Black Hawk Down, which is inspired by both the famed movie and the 2003 Delta Force game. This adventure will transport players from the futuristic combat scenarios they’re used to and set the stage in 1990s Somalia. It’s a bold strategy, and while it may seem a bit disconnected from the game’s usual multiplayer focus, Ricky Liao, the game design director, emphasizes the importance of creating an authentic experience and immersive reimagining of Black Hawk Down to Team Jade.
In a recent chat with Liao, through a Team Jade translator, he shared, “With Black Hawk Down, we aim to deliver something truly unique for players—a narrative that’s not your typical RPG storyline. We’re crafting FPS gameplay elements specifically to serve the narrative. Our goal is to plunge Delta Force players deep into the universe we’re shaping, giving them the genuine sensation of being on the battlefield.”
Liao’s commitment shines through his focus on maintaining player engagement through gameplay rather than inundating them with cutscenes. Although some cinematics will be present, Team Jade is purposefully distancing itself from relying on them as the central narrative vehicle.
Curious about the length of the campaign, I asked Liao for insight. He explained that it’s tough to pin down an exact duration. “This experience isn’t solely single-player, as you have the option to team up with friends. The length also hinges on your skill and how you choose to play. It’s challenging to provide a precise figure,” he elaborates.
He also noted that, while reminiscent of the classic shooters that fans might fondly remember, this isn’t a straightforward remake of the 2003 Delta Force Black Hawk Down campaign. Instead, it’s a modern reimagining and retelling of the iconic story.
Players who dive into this campaign can look forward to earning exclusive rewards that can be showcased in multiplayer modes. True to Team Jade’s stance against pay-to-win tactics, these rewards won’t include anything like weapons or operators that might tilt the gameplay in someone’s favor.
“We avoid calling it an ‘achievement system’ since that term can evoke many meanings,” Liao points out. “But if you engage with the campaign and excel, you’ll earn some noteworthy rewards for multiplayer, and we’ll ensure it’s done in a fair and tasteful manner.”
Slated for a January 2025 release, Black Hawk Down marks Delta Force’s initial venture into single-player content. As to whether there will be more campaigns in the future, Liao playfully suggests, “Let us roll out this one first, and then we’ll see!”
