Game enthusiasts can now catch a fresh sneak peek at “Overthrown,” an innovative city-building game that combines comfort with cooperative elements, set to release on Xbox Series X/S and PC this December. Slated for an early access debut on December 5th, the game promises to immerse players in unique gameplay blending third-person perspectives with traditional city-building mechanics.
Developed by indie studio Brimstone, known for their past creations like “Lance A Lot” and “Banzai Royale,” “Overthrown” invites players into a vibrant, engaging world. The latest screenshots, shared by publisher Maximum Entertainment, reveal the game’s rich, colorful aesthetics and its distinguishing feature: playing a city-building game from a third-person viewpoint. This rather unconventional approach hearkens back to titles like “Metropolismania” from 2001, adding a fresh twist that may set Overthrown apart from other games in its genre.
In “Overthrown,” you’ll step into the role of a dedicated queen who doesn’t shy away from dirt and danger. Whether it’s chopping trees, erecting infrastructure, or warding off threats like bandits or mutants, this game offers substantial action alongside its building roots. It’s a blend of strategic city management and dynamic action-adventure, letting you explore and protect your domain with unique abilities like running on water and wielding weapons with extraordinary speed and style. If traditional overhead views are more your speed, don’t worry – they’re included too.
As Brimstone continues to refine “Overthrown” in early access over approximately a year, the development phase will lean heavily on player input. Expect a finalized release possibly by late 2025. At launch, players can dive into the solo experience or engage friends in online co-op for up to six players, navigating through changing seasons that bring their own sets of challenges and visual transformations.
Available on Xbox Series X/S and PC (via Steam) starting December 5th, “Overthrown” will also debut on Xbox Game Pass, including both PC Game Pass and Microsoft’s Ultimate subscription service. Though PlayStation fans will have to wait due to the platform’s restrictions on early access, a PS5 version is on the horizon, post the early access journey.
If you’re drawn to games that let you lift trees to the sawmill for planks or engage creatively with your environment, “Overthrown” offers plenty of thrills. Face off against mutants and bandits while investing in your kingdom’s growth, and collaborate or compete with up to six friends in a lively multiplayer setting. Manage resources wisely through seasons, keep your people content, and establish your fledgling territory firmly in this exciting new sandbox adventure by Brimstone.
