One of the fresh, massive additions to Days Gone Remastered is the Horde Assault, a survival arcade mode that’s sure to keep you on your toes. Before delving into this, it’s worth watching the gameplay trailer to see what’s in store.
What is Horde Assault mode?
Horde Assault pushes the boundaries with gameplay that’s as unpredictable as it is challenging. You’ll aim to score high while surviving increasingly larger hordes and fierce enemies like Breakers, Reachers, and Rager bears. The landscape is relentless; the longer you hold out against the enemies, the stronger they get. It all ties back to Days Gone’s core theme, “This World Comes For You,” but it’s presented in a novel way that truly lets this open-world game shine. Consider it your playground where endless hordes are there to conquer. It’s time to show those Freakers who’s in command.
You begin your journey in Horde Assault in Cascade with only a sidearm—fighting to make it to your Drifter bike, an indispensable ally when navigating the expansive region. Hunt for Supply Boxes scattered across the map to gain access to powerful weapons, including a flamethrower that wasn’t part of the Story mode. Each box offers random weapons, keeping every session fresh and unpredictable, which is crucial when you’re facing a daunting horde.
To survive these intense rounds, consider completing Side Jobs to refill resources and earn extra XP. These smaller missions are crucial; running out of ammunition with hundreds of Freakers on your tail is anything but desirable. And just when you think you’ve mastered the chaos, surviving 30 minutes unleashes the Ultimate Horde—an endless, heart-pounding battle that will relentlessly track you down. We’ll leave it at that and let you experience the frenzy yourself.
Survive
Conquering the waves in Horde Assault isn’t just about surviving; it’s a journey that rewards persistence. As you climb through the levels, you’ll unlock a host of incentives including characters never played before, new cosmetic patches, and unique Injectors—all designed to elevate your gaming experience.
Days Gone veterans will recognize the power of Injectors from the main storyline; they return here with amplified effects that significantly alter gameplay. In your quest to become a Legendary Survivor, you’ll collect 24 unique Injectors—half positive, boosting your score but increasing the difficulty, and half negative, which diminish your score but provide indispensable survival benefits. While we aim to keep surprises under wraps, a couple of standout Injectors include:
-
Exploding Freakers: This turns the undead into bombs, exploding upon defeat—a clever tactic to manage larger hordes.
- Wanted: If you’re up for a challenge, this Injector cranks the difficulty right from the start by maximizing heat levels, putting you to the ultimate test.
As you navigate Horde Assault, progress through a Reward path consisting of 35 levels. Each milestone grants you exciting rewards like Injectors, character skins, and new patch cosmetics. Fans will be thrilled to find six additional playable characters from Days Gone, including Skizzo, O’Brian, and Lisa. The returning cosmetic patches are an ode to our challenge-loving players from 2019 and are perfect to flaunt in the Enhanced Photo Mode. These patches easily transition over to the story mode for added bragging rights. Additionally, tackling the Reputation Phase with top scores across all regions will net you some bonus prizes—including a much-anticipated item related to your bike, though we’re keeping the details under wraps for now.
Horde Assault might be considered endgame content, but don’t let that stop you from diving in as soon as you fire up Days Gone Remastered. Newcomers are encouraged to familiarize themselves with basic mechanics through the story first, but veterans can jump straight into the chaos and uncover Days Gone’s unique series of challenges. This mode alone offers 10 more hours of gripping gameplay, adding layers to an already content-rich package.
