nDreams, widely recognized for its free-to-play arena shooter, FRENZIES, has recently updated fans on the game’s progress. The team announced that the game would be leaving early access later this year; however, contrary to prior plans, a release for PSVR 2 is no longer in the cards.
In a candid statement, nDreams assured fans that though FRENZIES won’t make it to PSVR 2, there are thrilling PS VR2 developments to watch out for:
“We’re thrilled to share that FRENZIES will remain free-to-play once it exits Early Access this year! Since its initial roll-out on Meta Quest, the response has been fantastic. Players have really embraced FRENZIES’ chaotic fun, and we’re dedicated to expanding on that as we move forward.
It was a tough decision, but we’ve chosen to prioritize the Meta Quest version, meaning FRENZIES won’t receive a PS VR2 release. We understand this will come as a disappointment to those excited for the PS VR2 launch. Rest assured, we have more exciting PS VR2 news on the horizon!
Stay tuned for more updates about FRENZIES in the upcoming weeks as we unveil our Early Access roadmap.”
Launching its early access phase in October 2024 for Quest 2 and subsequent devices, FRENZIES offers dynamic arena shooting thrills coupled with a variety of classic weapons and game modes. This is all wrapped into a robust, VR-centric gaming experience.
While PSVR 2 enthusiasts might feel let down, from a development perspective, the choice mirrors strategic soundness. Over recent months, the Quest platform has witnessed a wave of younger users, especially with the introduction of the $300 Quest 3S, which has, in turn, surged the demand for free-to-play content.
Samantha Ryan, Meta’s VP of Metaverse Content, voiced her insights in February: “We foresee free-to-play (F2P) evolving as a widespread strategy for developers who have largely depended on premium apps. However, we don’t anticipate F2P completely overshadowing premium apps—both models will likely coexist.”
The financial landscape many developers find themselves in is increasingly tense. nDreams appears eager to capitalize on its largest potential audience as they consolidate into their new in-house studio, Compass, following recent layoffs.
Yet, as a chief player in the XR game realm, nDreams boasts an impressive portfolio of top-tier VR games. Titles like Vendetta Forever, Power Wash Simulator VR, Ghostbusters: Rise of the Ghost Lord, and Phantom: Cover Ops have all contributed to their notable reputation in the industry.
