This Black Friday has brought some sizzling deals, especially if you’re on the lookout for powerful handheld gaming devices. Among these, the AMD Z1 Extreme handhelds are turning heads, with discounts reaching their lowest levels yet. One standout deal features the Lenovo Legion Go, which, after a generous $227 price cut, now costs just $472.97. This is more affordable than the Steam Deck OLED and significantly undercuts options like the Asus ROG Ally X, even as the holiday sales roll out. When you compare performance, the Asus ROG Ally X only slightly edges out other Z1 Extreme-based handhelds like the Lenovo Legion Go and Asus ROG Ally. However, the Legion Go distinguishes itself with a larger 8.8-inch screen and detachable controllers reminiscent of the Nintendo Switch’s design.
The Legion Go is positioned as one of the top gaming PC handhelds in this price range. Although the Z1 Extreme/Ryzen 7840U/Ryzen 8840U handhelds demand a robust power source to outperform the Deck and Deck OLED, the impressive performance they deliver is worth it, particularly if you plan to enjoy gaming at home.
While it’s easy to rave about the Lenovo Legion Go at this price, a balanced view requires us to consider some potential downsides. For starters, if you don’t own a desktop and are considering an external GPU docking solution, you might find the Ally Extreme or Ally X to be a better choice. Those models offer superior eGPU support. Though the Legion Go includes dual USB4 support, it falls short of the performance provided by OCuLink (in ideal scenarios) or Asus’ proprietary eGPU connector, which means high-end GPUs might not reach their full potential due to connection limitations.
Additionally, the Legion Go sports an IPS screen rather than the OLED one. However, since OLED isn’t yet standard across all handhelds, this boils down to a trade-off rather than a drawback. While OLED would deliver better contrast, an IPS screen is still commendable, more so when it stretches over 8.8 inches—larger than the Deck OLED’s 7.4 inches—and boasts a higher resolution and refresh rate (1080p at 144Hz compared to 800p at 90Hz). For gamers who value expansive screen space and immersive experiences, the Legion Go could be an ideal match.
