Meta recently decided to pull the plug on a VR version of System Shock 2, alongside several other projects, according to Stephen Kick, the head of the studio handling the remaster. However, there is a chance that development could resume down the road.
The much-anticipated 25th anniversary update of the cult favorite 1999 action RPG will make its way to Steam, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch this June. But a recent post by Stephen Kick on Bluesky revealed that a VR edition, initially planned for Oculus, is no longer in the works.
Kick shared on Bluesky: “We had been working on the VR version for Oculus, but Facebook cut a lot of projects, and, unfortunately, SS2VR was among them. There’s been some talk about picking up where we left off, and if that happens, it might be released as a future patch or even as a standalone title. We’ll just have to see how the 25th Anniversary remaster performs!”
Fans heard whispers about this VR adaptation back in 2021, with plans for it to include full co-op multiplayer support, allowing cross-play with PC users. But by 2022, it had slipped lower on the studio’s priority list, only to be axed later.
What remains unclear from Kick’s post is whether this Oculus version was meant for PC VR via Oculus Rift / Quest Link or as a standalone Quest release. We’ve reached out for further details and have also contacted Meta to see if they have anything to add to the situation.
Stephen Kick did mention that the possibility of revisiting the VR project has been discussed. He suggests that the success of the 25th Anniversary remaster could very well dictate whether a VR version eventually sees the light of day.
