I’ve been neck-deep in Monster Hunter Wilds since it launched a few weeks ago. Right now, I’m caught up in the pursuit of leveling up my hunter rank in those challenging high-rank environments. I find myself constantly deliberating over which new armor set to craft next. Currently, I’m on the trail of the formidable Jin Dahaad, but the Gravios armor, with its heavy plating that’s ideal for my hammer build, keeps catching my eye. There’s so much to explore and conquer in Wilds, yet, oddly enough, something feels like it’s missing.
What I’m really craving is the chance to dress up a pig and carry it around like a baby.
Let me elaborate—I’m talking about the beloved Poogie from Monster Hunter. This pudgy, floppy-eared pig has become almost as iconic to the series as the terrifying Rathalos itself. Poogie has been a staple in Monster Hunter games for ages; my first encounter was in the hub world of Monster Hunter World. Petting Poogie was a ritual that played a charming tune while you showered him with affection. Nail your timing, and Poogie was in bliss! But, as with everything in Monster Hunter, there’s a twist. Botch the timing just a bit, and Poogie would bolt, leaving you to your quest.
In past games, Poogie roamed the main gathering areas, offering a touch of luck to hunters who gave him a pat before heading out on a hunt—supposedly increasing the odds of snagging those rare monster parts. Some die-hard fans maintain that this quirk is a hidden gem coded into the game, though it’s never been officially confirmed.
But Poogie isn’t just for luck! You could win his affection and play dress-up, outfitting him in all sorts of adorable costumes. Who could resist a pig in a bee outfit? In Monster Hunter World, I would joyfully carry Poogie around, anticipating the telltale buzz of my controller that signaled hidden treasure was nearby. (TagBackTV on YouTube has a fantastic rundown on how that worked.)
In Monster Hunter Wilds, there’s indeed a Poogie, but he’s tucked away until Chapter 3, nestled in a village I seldom visit unless a quest demands it. While this Poogie often has the adorable addition of a perfectly balanced spherical frog on his back, the interactions just don’t measure up to those from earlier games. No charming striped pajamas or wooly ram outfits here. I can only manage a simple pet and maybe change his name.
With the announcement of the upcoming Title 1 update for Monster Hunter Wilds next week, Capcom stirred up excitement with the promise of a vibrant new gathering hub. This hub offers an alternative to the scattered campsites in the Forbidden Lands. The 12-minute sneak peek by Capcom teases all sorts of fun in the hunters’ Grand Hub, boasting games and an expanded kitchen. (I’m particularly stoked about this, as it whispers possibilities of the return of the culinary genius, the Meowscular Chef.)
Yet, for me, the new hub won’t feel complete without a little pig I can hold and cherish. Capcom, I’m begging you—give us what we truly want.
