If you’ve ever dreamed of diving into No Man’s Sky to live out a fantasy as a dinosaur-loving paleontologist who somehow also managed to woo Jennifer Aniston, today is your day. The team over at Hello Games has launched the Relics update, introducing a thrilling new feature: giant alien fossil hunting.
This comes on the heels of the massive Worlds update that landed back in January, which unveiled “billions of new stars and planets,” including gigantic gas giants and some very peculiar flying squid-like creatures that might just give you a smack for overfishing.
The latest addition, the Relics update, delves into the realm of space paleontology—a nod to Ross Geller from Friends, before he was caught up in his sandwich mishaps or dressing as a bizarre festive armadillo. The update allows you to embark on a galactic adventure to “unearth hundreds of unique bones” and display your findings in a museum, piecing together the ancient puzzles of these extinct creatures. You might even get creative—imagine rearranging the bones and fooling No Man’s Sky’s quirky alien races into believing they descend from a technologically savvy but strangely unattractive species named the Fartongueians. Sounds tempting, doesn’t it?
Well, hold that thought. This update also features Reanimated Guardians, described as “hulking stone lifeforms” that stand guard over these ancient burial sites. They might look more like formidable stone protectors rather than beings with faces resembling the wrong end of a creature, so there goes any cheeky ideas. You’ll also encounter Living Stone Sentries and imposing Stone Effigies, representing the remnants of bygone alien civilizations that vigilantly oversee these relic worlds.
Oh, and on these fossil-rich planets and some far-out purple star systems, watch out for Titanic Boneworms and “skeletal fauna” still living among the bones. As you explore, stop by Space Stations to barter your carefully curated fossil exhibits with dedicated Fossil Collectors, or exchange some bones for an assortment of other fossils. You might even cook up a storm with them!
Make sure to join the Galactic Paleontology Society and embark on the new expedition Relics brings along. It’s packed with intriguing rewards like a jetpack crafted from sentient rock, a character transformation to mimic a sentient rock, and even a skeletal animal companion to accompany you on your journeys.
