Showtime is making another attempt to reignite the Dexter saga, introducing a fresh spin with its upcoming prequel series, Dexter: Original Sin. Finally, fans can feast their eyes on the first trailer that’s just been unveiled.
While the original Dexter series wrapped up over ten years ago, the current trend of reviving beloved shows and focusing on intellectual property has sparked new life into the franchise. In 2022, we saw the arrival of Dexter: New Blood, a sequel situated a decade after the original series’ conclusion. Now, Showtime and Paramount are treating fans with a sneak peek into the prequel series, Dexter Original Sin. Before you dive in, it’s important to note: there are spoilers ahead related to the New Blood finale. Consider yourself warned!
In the trailer, you’ll catch glimpses from the end of New Blood, highlighting the dramatic moment when Dexter finds himself bleeding out in the snow after being shot by his son, Harrison. As Dexter receives medical treatment, his past comes rushing back, paving the way for the prequel storyline. “Set in 1991 Miami, Dexter: Original Sin traces Dexter’s transformation from an ordinary student into a serial killer seeking justice,” the official synopsis explains. “Unable to suppress his violent inclinations any longer, Dexter must navigate his way through this dark calling.”
Guided by his father, Harry—portrayed by Christian Slater—Dexter learns to harness his darker impulses through a code designed to help him eliminate harmful individuals while keeping clear of the law’s clutches. This new chapter presents a unique challenge for a younger Dexter, especially as he embarks on a forensics internship with the Miami Metro Police Department.
Michael C. Hall reprises his iconic role, lending his voice for narration, while Sarah Michelle Gellar, of Buffy fame, makes a special guest appearance. Given its status as a prequel, we can safely assume Dexter’s ultimate fate remains unchanged, yet the journey promises to be entertaining.
The series may even shed some light on Dexter’s fate after New Blood, with another sequel series in the pipeline titled Resurrection. It wouldn’t be shocking if the prequel wraps up with Dexter recovering, but that reveal awaits when the show drops on December 13 on Paramount+.
