Sony has just announced a major price cut for their PSVR 2, taking effect next month. This move will see the PS5 and PC-compatible VR headset reduced to $400.
Originally, Sony launched the PSVR 2 almost two years ago at a price of $550. Surprisingly, this price reduction comes without much of a splash at its two-year anniversary. It also went unmentioned during Sony’s State of Play event a couple of weeks back. Starting in March, the PSVR 2 will be available for $400, €450, £400, or ¥66,980.
What’s interesting is that this new price applies to both the standard PSVR package—comprising the headset, two Sense controllers, and headphones—and the Horizon Call of the Mountain bundle, which was originally launched in February 2023 at $600.
In the past, PSVR 2 has been subject to various sales, sometimes dropping the price even further than what we’ll see this March. For instance, back in November 2024, Sony slashed the price of the Horizon Call of the Mountain bundle to just $350, which suggests that even more enticing savings might be on the horizon.
Sony’s latest announcement about this price cut also emphasizes a selection of high-quality PSVR 2 content. This includes games like Skydance’s Behemoth, Metro Awakening VR, and Alien: Rogue Incursion, and other upcoming titles like Aces of Thunder, Dreams of Another, Hitman World of Assassination, and The Midnight Walk. Despite this, Sony hasn’t seemed to fully commit its resources to backing the PSVR 2.
In terms of first-party games, Sony has released only a few for the PSVR 2, such as Horizon Call of the Mountain, and VR modes for Gran Turismo 7, Resident Evil Village, and Resident Evil 4 Remake. This contrasts with the original 2016 PSVR offerings like Astro Bot Rescue Mission, Blood & Truth, Until Dawn: Rush of Blood, PlayStation VR Worlds, VR Playroom, and other VR modes for Gran Turismo Sport and Resident Evil 7: Biohazard.
However, Sony did make things a bit easier for PSVR 2 users last August by launching a $60 PC Adapter. This handy device allows users to connect to a VR-ready PC to enjoy SteamVR games like Half-Life: Alyx, Fallout 4 VR, and more. Yet, it seems that this is just a step in Sony’s gradual separation of the PSVR 2 from the larger PS5 ecosystem.
Looking ahead, further discounts could spark a significant uptick in sales, similar to the boost seen during the recent holiday season. This could appeal to PS5 players eager to explore both a backlog of excellent games and a steady influx of third-party titles. If another substantial 42% discount comes up, akin to Black Friday, it could bring the PSVR 2 down to just $232—perfect for a stocking stuffer!
(Note from February 27th, 2025): We’ve updated the Euro price to €450, which was initially reported as €550.
