It looks like VR enthusiasts are in for more excitement as Blade & Sorcery, the beloved combat simulator, has hit its milestone 1.0 release in June 2024. Warpfrog, the creative mind behind this hit game, is already diving into a new project that promises to be as flexible and modifiable as their renowned physics-based combat experience.
While the details are scarce, Warpfrog has shared with Road to VR that their upcoming venture is, indeed, another VR game. Fans can expect it to carry the signature elements that define Warpfrog’s work, namely, a focus on physics-driven interactions and authentic simulation experiences.
What’s more intriguing for the modding community is the confirmation that the new title will offer modding possibilities akin to Blade & Sorcery. The current game simplifies modding with tools like the Nexus Mod Manager, which helps players easily tweak everything from minor enhancements like adding extra visual effects to creating entirely new user-generated maps and weapons.
In a discussion with Meta back in October, Warpfrog revealed that they are integrating a fresh framework into their forthcoming game. This decision comes from pushing their previous framework to its limits during Blade & Sorcery’s extensive early access phase.
“We needed to untangle some of the ‘spaghetti code’ and rethink our approach for a new game engine,” the studio explained. “We’re building a new, faster framework for this game, designed specifically for our team. It’s the first time we’ll fully develop a game from start to finish with a complete team.”
Given the evolution of Warpfrog from a solo endeavor led by KospY to a full-fledged team of nearly 30 developers, it’s safe to say expectations are high for their next release. Blade & Sorcery itself has significantly expanded with the addition of the ‘Crystal Hunt’ story mode in its June update. It’s transformed from a purely visceral melee sandbox into an engaging adventure game, complete with an expansive narrative, upgrade systems, and a more interconnected world than ever before.
Warpfrog hinted at an exciting future in a Steam news update, stating, “This is where the fun begins… The past five years have been an incredible journey, and with the experience we’ve gained, we’re eager to unveil what we’ve been working on. Your support has enabled us to develop bigger and better games.”
