Rarely do we get the opportunity to dive into a game across multiple platforms, so when we do, it’s quite a treat. With today’s tech, you’d think every version of a game would be identical, but that’s not always the case. My colleague, Albert Eres, and I decided to explore Crypt Custodian, a fresh Metroidvania title that has landed on both PCs and consoles. For our review, I’ve tackled the PS5 version, while Albert explored the Switch. Let’s find out how both versions stack up.
The game whisks you into a quirky story revolving around a cat stuck in the afterlife for, let’s say, less-than-serious reasons. Denied entry to heaven, our feline hero ends up outside The Palace and is tasked with cleaning this eerie realm armed only with a broom. The narrative is whimsical and well-crafted, bringing a refreshing charm to the Metroidvania genre known for its action-heavy plots. It’s rare to find such light-hearted characters in these settings, making the experience unique and engaging.
What sets Crypt Custodian apart is its gameplay perspective. Instead of a traditional side-scrolling format, the game opts for a top-down view reminiscent of Zelda: A Link to the Past. This change in perspective is a blessing for those of us who aren’t fans of frenetic platforming. Navigating from this viewpoint feels more precise and less frustrating.
As is common in Metroidvanias, you’ll find areas initially inaccessible, prompting plenty of backtracking as you progress. But don’t worry, the game ensures you won’t stumble upon challenges you’re not ready for, gradually easing you into harder zones with the skills you acquire. This balance strikes an enjoyable mix of exploration and manageability, never overwhelming but keeping you engaged.
Action and puzzle-solving in Crypt Custodian blend seamlessly. While you can indulge your urge for combat, the fights are rewarding yet never frustratingly difficult. Puzzles present brain-teasers without veering into annoyance—typically, if you’re stumped, it’s likely a small clue you’ve missed. This synergy between puzzles and action maintains a steady, enjoyable rhythm throughout your playthrough.
Collectibles add another layer of appeal to the game. Upgrade points and hidden cats are scattered across the map, often behind puzzles or in unreachable areas at the start. Collecting these offers rewards, like upgrades, making exploration rewarding. Handy warp points ease the necessity of backtracking, so revisiting areas remains hassle-free.
Speaking of these warp points, they serve as save havens where you can also equip abilities. Since you don’t know where the next save point is, reaching one can be a nerve-wracking journey, especially when all seems lost and lives run low. The relief when finding one is palpable.
Graphically, Crypt Custodian embraces an arcade-like charm, paired with excellent sound and smooth controls on PS5. As someone occasionally vexed by the Metroidvania genre, I found none of the usual frustration here and instead was eager to see what lay ahead. The game carries a delightful 90s RPG nostalgia and blends gameplay elements that might evoke fond memories for long-time gamers. Ultimately, I’d rate this title as a fantastic addition to my collection, one I’ll certainly revisit to complete.
Overall Score: 9/10
Albert Eres shares his insights, noting how Crypt Custodian feels like a breath of fresh air amidst the deluge of Soulslike titles. Drawing from Zelda and Metroid, it offers a tailored experience that many casual gamers will appreciate, driven by a charmingly unique storyline featuring our Neko friends.
In terms of gameplay, Crypt Custodian embraces approachability regardless of difficulty, offering predictability with enemies’ attack indicators—a welcome change from games demanding you master dodging. While some encounters are still challenging, having some forewarning enhances enjoyment for those preferring to savor the action.
There’s also a suite of customizable game assists, affecting attack power, fall damage, and extra health, among others. These adjustments, crucially, can spell the difference between relishing a game and abandoning it in frustration. Yet, a minor glitch on the Switch can revert these settings, slightly marring the experience.
An especially helpful setting extends time for puzzles. While many games equate difficulty with enemy toughness, here, you get more breathing room for timed puzzle sections, often optional but beneficial in earning points. It’s comforting to know that not being a pro in puzzles and platforming doesn’t hinder progression.
For those who identify as casual gamers, or who adore Zelda, Metroid, or cats, Crypt Custodian comes highly recommended. It delivers all the fun with provisions to tackle tougher segments, adding a cherry atop this delightful gaming experience.
Overall Score: 9/10
Crypt Custodian is a love letter to classic RPG and puzzle games. Its captivating story, addictive gameplay, and reasonable difficulty make it stand out. Despite covering familiar ground, it does so with such flair, those who appreciate Metroidvanias owe it to themselves to dive in.
