About a year back, I dove into creating 3rd Party 64 episodes, focusing on various Army Men games released for the Nintendo 64. Just as I was delving into this new project, The Video Game History Foundation (VGHF) released a holiday-themed commercial for Army Men: Sarge’s Heroes, one of the games I was eager to explore.
The commercial sparked a fascinating conversation with Frank Cifaldi, the director at VGHF. He shared that they’d recently received a collection from Michael Mendheim, the creative force behind the Sarge’s Heroes series. By the end of our chat, my inbox was brimming with documentation about the development of the Army Men games, and suddenly, my project had grown more ambitious. By late summer 2024, Frank graciously invited me to join an upcoming episode of The Video Game History Hour, where Mendheim himself would discuss his creations, offering even more depth to my research.
This particular episode of 3rd Party 64 integrates clips from that enlightening interview, supplemented by insights from the documents VGHF shared. Covering these games so comprehensively wouldn’t have been possible without the crucial work that VGHF does.
But there’s more to this story!
As it turned out, I discovered a wealth of information about Army Men: Sarge’s Heroes that was too expansive to fit into a single video. So, we decided to create a second video. This one highlights nine fascinating, previously hidden details unearthed during my investigation. You can check out this revealing video on The Video Game History Foundation’s YouTube channel.
