Alta, the creative minds behind the popular A Township Tale (2021), are back with an intriguing glimpse into their latest project, REAVE. This upcoming dungeon-crawler and extraction game is shaping up nicely, with the studio unveiling new systems and environments, though they’re still very much in development.
The recent developer video provides a sneak peek of the updated game features, spotlighting a significant new area known as “The Fallen Bastion.” Lead environment artist Sean Ellis describes it as an intricate mix of vast open zones, narrow passageways, and a blend of luminous and shadowy spots, perfect for both player ambushes and sneaking past foes.
In the heart of this sprawling space lies a magical pedestal, the site for summoning epic boss battles. At the moment, the testing involves a massive spider, though players shouldn’t worry too much—this arachnid is a temporary placeholder as they fine-tune the mechanics.
Alta reassures fans, “The spider won’t hang around permanently, but it’s essential for us to gauge the feel of a real boss fight while we craft something unique.”
The team is actively refining areas showcased earlier, tweaking and enhancing them significantly. Some sections might even see complete overhauls in the future. Excitingly, Alta has also unveiled a formidable new enemy model, set to replace the old skeleton placeholders. These new adversaries will present varying challenges based on their equipped gear.
In true extraction game fashion, REAVE places a strong emphasis on its unique in-world currency known as “Echoes”—a name that may change. Players collect Echoes in vessels that gradually fill as they explore. Defeating enemies releases these Echoes, though diligent explorers might unearth them stashed around the game world. These Echoes enable players to access loot rooms and can be spent to make a swift exit from dungeons, ushering them back to the social hub where they can trade their hard-earned treasures.
Eager gamers keen to get their hands on this adventure early can snag a coveted testing slot by joining the game’s Discord server. While an official release date remains under wraps, Alta has confirmed their aim is to launch REAVE on Quest 2 and higher, as well as PC VR headsets. Keep an eye on this space for more updates!
