Exciting news for Pokémon Go fans—there’s a new headliner making waves at the Unova Tour event!
For the first time in Pokémon Go, the star attraction will be the iconic box mascots from Pokémon Black 2 and White 2, “White Kyurem” and “Black Kyurem.” These legendary Ice/Dragon-type Pokémon are set to debut during a special celebration of the fifth generation of Pokémon. You can catch them first at in-person events happening in Los Angeles and New Taipei City, scheduled from February 21 to 23. But don’t worry if you can’t make it to these locations—the worldwide launch is set for March 1 and 2.
As trainers, you’ll have the opportunity to challenge Black and White Kyurem in raiding battles set at the second-highest difficulty level. Successfully battling these Pokémon will give you “Volt Fusion Energy” for creating Black Kyurem, or “Blaze Fusion Energy” for its White counterpart. This mechanic mirrors the approach used to create “Dusk Mane Necrozma” and “Dawn Wings Necrozma” at last summer’s Pokémon Go Fest. You’ll need a Kyurem plus either a Zekrom or Reshiram, with Kyurem dictating the stats and shiny potential, if applicable. Should the Kyurem know the move Glaciate during the fusion, you’ll get Black Kyurem with “Freeze Shock” when combined with Zekrom, and “Ice Burn” when fused with Reshiram. We’ve reached out to Niantic asking if Kyurem caught during the event will come equipped with Glaciate to simplify this fusion process. Although this fusion energy becomes available at these in-person events, trainers elsewhere can join in the raids remotely up to five times each day during the weekend. However, only those who are local to the events will receive the fusion energy.
Adding a unique touch, these captured legendaries will feature a special background on their status screen, inspired by Pokémon Black and White. Reshiram will display a Pokémon Black-themed background, Zekrom will boast a Pokémon White-themed one, and Kyurem might come with either. If you fuse two Pokémon that have different backgrounds—like a Zekrom with a Black-themed Kyurem—you’ll get a completely new background.
So gear up, head to those raid battles, and enjoy this thrilling addition to Pokémon Go!
