Just this week, Steel Wool Studios revealed the launch date for their much-anticipated game, Five Nights at Freddy’s: Secret of the Mimic. It’s set to hit PS5 and PC screens on June 13th. Interestingly, although we saw a demo for PSVR 2 earlier on, any mention of support for this platform has now been mysteriously dropped, raising questions among fans and industry watchers alike.
Back at PAX West 2024, attendees had a chance to experience Five Nights at Freddy’s: Secret of the Mimic as a playable demo on the PSVR 2. It was originally pitched as a blend of virtual reality and flatscreen gameplay, setting high expectations from Steel Wool Studios, a team known for its expertise in VR gaming.
This studio, which got an early financial jump with $5 million from HTC back in 2016, has become a notable name in VR game development. Some key titles under their belt include Hello Neighbor Search and Rescue (2023), FNAF: Help Wanted (2019), and its sequel, FNAF: Help Wanted 2 (2024).
However, following the announcement of the game’s release date, the studio has surprisingly scrubbed any reference to PSVR 2 support in all their marketing. Even on the PlayStation Store page for FNAF: Secret of the Mimic, which evidence suggests was once tailored for optional PSVR 2 play, there’s no longer a trace of it.
The only hint of PSVR 2 compatibility came from an official PlayStation post coinciding with the release date announcement on February 12th—but that, too, has vanished. So far, Steel Wool Studios has kept silent on whether or when PSVR 2 support might be reintroduced. Equally intriguing is the fate of VR support for the PC version, set for release on both Epic Games Store and Steam.
While we’ve reached out to Steel Wool Studios for clarification, we’re still waiting for a response. As soon as we receive more information on whether this is just a delay in launching the VR mode or part of a different release plan, we’ll be sure to update you.
